For the 2003 Lifetime Achievement Award:
Our first/next Marshalltown Champions are a man and woman
who have touched us as educators, horticulturalists, civic leaders,
environmentalists, and conservationists.
Their lives have been exemplary as they have combined
their respect for the environment and their responsibility to provide for a
positive future in projects which engage young people in learning outside
classroom walls.
 | Although both had professional careers outside
agriculture, they bought a farm which they offered, because of their
conservation practices, as a learning laboratory for school children who
have used it as an outdoor classroom for over three decades. |
 | Their work with waterways, terracing, no-till farming,
planting prairies, woodland restoration, and tiling of wetlands has also
attracted groups from the Iowa Woodland Owners Association, Iowa State
University Extension Service, Creative Retirement Classes, and Sister City
visitors from Russia and Japan. |
 | They estimate that over two hundred thousand trees have
been planted with their tree spade and planter. |
 | In 1991 they gave 160 acres to the Iowa Natural
Heritage Foundation for use by the Marshall County Conservation Board. After
years of dreaming, planning, and fund raising, the development of a Nature
Center, bridges, walks, a picnic shelter, and parking area are ready to open
to the public this weekend. |
These Marshalltown champions have been leaders in the
community, the county, and the state:
 | She was a past president and member of the Marshall
County Board of Conservation, particularly active in negotiations to acquire
land to establish the Green Castle Wildlife Area in Marshall County. She was
also elected to the Marshall County Soil Conservation District Commission
and appointed to serve on the Iowa County Conservation Board. |
 | She has served on the Iowa Humanities Board, the MMSC
Board, the Marshall County Historical Society Board, the Iowa Farmer
Advisory Committee representing the Iowa Department of Natural Resources,
and the Marshalltown Area Diversity Committee. |
 | He served as Mayor of Marshalltown in 1956-57, as
Central Iowa Fair Secretary, as President, Vice-President, and Board Member
for the United Way, as President of the Marshalltown Noon Kiwanis Club and
Lt. Governor of Kiwanis, and on both the Salvation Army Advisory Board and
the Central Iowa Mental Health Board. |
Please congratulate these Marshalltown Champions, to
receive a Lifetime Achievement Award , Mildred and Leonard Grimes….
