Camp Hertko Hollow
A Special Residential Camp For Children
Who Happen To Have Diabetes
Camp Hertko Hollow is held at the Des Moines YMCA Camp site,
located along the Des Moines River north of Boone, Iowa. Facilities include
cabins, large swimming pool, craft lodge, newly remodeled dining hall, a real
train caboose, sport fields, and a new outdoor education building. The Y-Camp
provides the recreational program and dedicated physicians, nurses, dietitians,
pharmacists, dietetic interns, and counselors volunteer their time to provide
the diabetes education and regulation aspects.
Dr.
Edward Hertko founded Camp Hertko Hollow in 1968 with 37 campers. In 2004 the
camp was attended by a total of 325 campers. The camp continues to
grow, so in order to accommodate all of the children with diabetes who want to
attend there are two sessions. The sessions are divided by grade with 6-12th grades in one
session and K-5th in the other. Camp dates for 2005
are July 3 to 9, 2005 for Middle and High School age campers (grades
6th-12th), or June 26 to July 2, 2005 for Elementary age (grades K-5th) campers.
Mini-camp is available during both sessions for campers ages 6 and 7. This
gives first time campers a taste of the camping experience. It's only 3 nights
long--no time to get homesick! Special fun activities are planned.
Siblings of the child with diabetes are also encouraged to attend camp if
space is available. Diabetes involves the entire family and increased
understanding about living with diabetes is beneficial.
Family Camp Weekends for the entire family are also scheduled during the
school year. View the website for details.
