Camp Hertko Hollow
A Special Residential Camp For Children Who Happen To Have Diabetes

Camp Hertko Hollow is held at the Des Moines YMCA Camp site, located along the Des Moines River north of Boone, Iowa. Facilities include cabins, large swimming pool, craft lodge, newly remodeled dining hall, sport fields, and a new outdoor education building. The Y-Camp provides the recreational program and dedicated physicians, nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, dietetic interns, and counselors volunteer their time to provide the diabetes education and regulation aspects.

edwardhertko.gif (36672 bytes)Dr. Edward Hertko founded Camp Hertko Hollow in 1968 with 37 campers. The camp has grown and added sessions in order to accommodate all of the teens and children with diabetes who want to attend.  The sessions are divided by grade: Teens 6th-12th grade in one session, Kids 2nd-5th in another. Check the Camp website for the schedule.

Mini-camps are available for campers in K-1st grade. This gives first time campers a taste of the camping experience. It's only 3 nights long--no time to get homesick! Special fun activities are planned. Check the Camp website for the schedule.

Siblings of the child with diabetes are also encouraged to attend camp if space is available. Diabetes involves the entire family and increased understanding about living with diabetes is beneficial.

Family Camp Weekends for the entire family are also scheduled during the school year. View the website for details.
